| QUICK ANSWER Hard water hair loss UK worry, but hard water doesn’t usually cause hair to fall out from the follicle. Its minerals build up on hair and scalp, leaving hair dry, dull, rough and harder to manage, which can lead to breakage and make hair look thinner. Diet gaps such as low iron and vitamin D matter more for density. |
Our salon is in south-west London, and if you’ve ever descaled a kettle round here, you know what our water is like. Clients ask me about it all the time, usually after a holiday somewhere their hair felt completely different.
Search “hard water hair loss UK” and you’ll find plenty of alarm. They’re right that it makes a difference. It’s just not quite the difference they fear.
What Hard Water Is
Hard water carries a lot of dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium, picked up as it passes through chalk and limestone. Much of England — London, the South East, East Anglia, parts of the Midlands — has hard water. Your water company can tell you how hard yours is, and the Drinking Water Inspectorate oversees water quality.
Does Hard Water Cause Hair Loss?
Not in the way people usually mean. Hard water doesn’t reach into the follicle and stop hair growing. What little research exists suggests it mainly affects how hair feels rather than how strong it is.
What it does do is leave minerals behind on the hair and scalp with every wash. Over time, that layer can make hair:
- dry, rough and straw-like
- dull, because it scatters light
- harder to manage and quicker to tangle
- feel not-quite-clean, because shampoo doesn’t lather or rinse as well
Dry, rough, tangly hair breaks more easily, and broken hair looks thinner. So hard water can make hair look like it’s thinning without the follicles being affected at all.
Fixes for Hard Water Hair
Clarify now and then. A gentle clarifying shampoo every couple of weeks lifts mineral build-up. More in scalp buildup .
Consider a shower filter. If hard water really bothers you, a filtering shower head is a simple one-off change.
Rinse well, finish cool. A thorough rinse leaves less residue behind.
Put moisture back. Light conditioning on the mid-lengths and ends, and a gentler cleanser — I explain why in sulfate-free shampoo .
What Matters More: Food
If hard water mostly affects how hair looks, diet affects how much of it grows. And there are two UK-specific gaps worth knowing about.
Iron. Low iron stores are one of the most common treatable causes of thinning in women, especially with heavy periods. I’ve written about ferritin and hair loss because it’s missed so often.
Vitamin D. With our long, grey winters, low vitamin D is common here. The NHS advice on vitamin D suggests most people consider a daily supplement in autumn and winter.
Get your bloods checked before you start supplementing anything for your hair.
If You’re Genuinely Losing Hair
If hair is coming out from the root, in handfuls or over months, don’t put it down to your tap. See your GP. Heavy shedding is often telogen effluvium , and other causes need ruling out.
Looking After Your Hair in a Hard-Water Town
When I made Nunu Moor, a London tap was one of the things I had in mind: a light, silicone-free botanical scalp and hair tonic that doesn’t add to the build-up hard water already leaves. Join the Nunu Moor waitlist to hear when it’s out.
Worried about hard water hair loss UK? Clarify occasionally, rinse well, put moisture back — and get your iron and vitamin D checked, because that’s where density is really decided.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does hard water cause hair loss?
Not from the follicle. Hard water leaves mineral build-up that makes hair dry, rough and more prone to breakage, which can make it look thinner.
Which parts of the UK have hard water?
Much of England, including London, the South East, East Anglia and parts of the Midlands. Your water company can tell you how hard your water is.
How do I protect my hair from hard water?
Clarify every couple of weeks, rinse thoroughly, consider a shower filter, and use a gentle cleanser and light conditioning.
Do shower filters help hair?
In hard-water areas they can reduce mineral build-up on hair and scalp, which helps with dryness and dullness.
What matters more for hair density than water?
Diet and health — especially iron and vitamin D levels. Ask your GP to check them if you’re thinning.
